Sabine Schwarz was born in Vienna in 1978. After school she started studying Technical Physics at Vienna University of Technology in 1996. During her studies she focused her interests on the microstructure of magnetic materials. After finishing her diploma study in 2002 at the Institute for Solid State Physics, she continued to work on self-assembled nanoparticles and nanopatterned arrays for high density magneto-recording as a PhD student in the group of Prof. J. Fidler. She finished her PhD in 2005 and started working in the Austrian Research Centers Seibersdorf as scientific assistant, primary specializing in microstructural investigations by means of TEM.

April to June 2007 she worked on the Chiraltem-Project of the European Commision in the group of Prof. Schattschneider as project assistant. In August 2007 she became a member of USTEM staff.
